The man behind the curtain

It was 1963 and Richard Viguerie was leading the Young America’s Foundation (YAF), a fledgling conservative organization founded by William F. Buckley, Jr. when he found the secret to his success: Direct Mail.


Although direct mail was still in its infancy, Viguerie saw that it would be a “game changer” in the world of politics and in the conservative movement. So, he did something unheard of.

Realizing that he needed to spend more energy learning about this new medium, he spoke with his wife, Elaine, and said:
